Gonorrhea and Infertility

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacteria. It can grow in the reproductive organs of a woman and can also grow in the mouth, throat, eyes, and anus.

If you are sexually active and have multiple partners, you are highly at risk for contracting gonorrhea.

Because the symptoms are sometimes very mild and difficult to detect, a woman may not know she has the disease.

If untreated, the disease can cause scar tissue and inflammation (pelvic inflammatory disease) which is one of the primary culprits in infertility. Gonorrhea is diagnosed by laboratory testing and is successfully treated and cured with antibiotics.

After treatment it is possible to contract gonorrhea again.
