Fertility

Woman with pregnancy test

The standard definition of fertility is the ability of a man and a woman to reproduce by means of sexual intercourse.

The reproductive system is relatively complex. If any problems occur in a part of the system, fertility may be interrupted.

A man must have sufficient healthy sperm and the woman must have viable eggs and the ability to ovulate (discharge eggs from the ovary). The sperm must ejaculate properly and be able to make the journey from the vagina to the female’s fallopian tubes.

Sperm need sufficient energy and motility to reach and penetrate a healthy egg. Then the fertilized egg must embed itself into the lining of a healthy uterus. The fetus must gestate without significant complication, for 37 – 42 weeks.
