Can Femara be used for Infertility?
Novartis manufactures Letrozole under the brand name Femara. It is FDA approved for the treatment of breast cancer in post menopausal women.
For a variety of reasons, Femara increases the production of Luteinizing Hormong (LH) and Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH). LH and FSH favor ovulation. That is why women who are infertile because of an inability to ovulate, have been able to get pregnant using Femara.
Femara has outperformed Clomid and some patients who were unsuccessful using Clomid, attained pregnancy using Letrozole.
Novartis has not yet approached the FDA for approval of the drug for infertility. There have been limited studies showing efficacy of Letrozole as a fertility drug; however, empirical evidence is very promising.
Letrozole has been linked with birth defects, but as long as it is taken before pregnancy (and not during) there is apparently no danger. For that reason, working closely with an infertility clinic ensuring good monitoring of your drug regimen, is imperative.
