GIFT

Gamete Intra-Fallopian Transfer

Mom and Newborn

GIFT (Gamete intra-fallopian transfer) has a relatively high success rate--slightly higher than in vitro fertilization , but is a procedure suitable only for couples with healthy fallopian tubes and adequate sperm.

If a woman's fallopian tubes are irregular, scarred or damaged, IVF is the preferred procedure because it bypasses the fallopian tube and places fertilized eggs directly into the uterus.

GIFT is performed in a clinical setting. The woman is given drugs prior to her procedure date, to stimulate her production of ovarian follicles—which are sacs containing the eggs.

A semen sample from the husband is taken a few hours before the procedure. Healthy eggs and washed sperm are loaded into a catheter and introduced into the woman’s fallopian tube through a small incision in her abdomen.

It is considered the most natural of the Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) procedures.
